Sophie-Rose’s Path to Pilates
Sophie-Rose’s path to Pilates wasn’t conventional. Originally pursuing a career in music, she had just finished touring when lockdown struck. With uncertainty looming, she turned to Pilates for stability—both physically and mentally.
“Pilates classes became my safe space,” she says. “I signed up to learn Classical Mat, then continued my training at Equinox Fully Comprehensive, where I studied Joseph Pilates’ original teachings.”
From there, she gained experience at Nobu Pilates and 180 Health Club, building a dedicated clientele.
“So many of my clients were based in West London. When I decided to open my own studio, their commitment made it feel like a natural progression.”
A Day in the Life
Running her own studio means early mornings.
“My studio opens at 7:30 a.m., so a routine is not something I have a lot of time for, though there are key things I try to implement: I start with lemon water and Symprove, avoiding coffee until I’ve eaten. On my commute, I listen to a podcast—anything to regulate my nervous system.”
One key ritual? Avoiding social media first thing.
“I use a Lumie light alarm for a gentle wake-up instead.”
Overcoming Challenges as a Pilates Instructor
Starting out wasn’t without its hurdles.
“I’m impatient, and Pilates training isn’t something you can rush. I had studios I dreamed of working at, but first, I had to qualify.”
She spent time teaching online and building private clients.
“That period was intense, but it was the deepest learning I’ve ever done.”
Even now, imposter syndrome can creep in.
“It’s easy to feel like you don’t know enough when surrounded by experienced instructors. But every body is different, and the learning never stops.”
Advice for Aspiring Pilates Teachers
For those looking to enter the field, Sophie-Rose shares her top advice:
- Choose the right course. Avoid short programmes—ask instructors you admire where they trained.
- Teach for free while training. It’s the best way to gain confidence.
- Read Return to Life Through Contrology by Joseph Pilates. It’s the ultimate Pilates guide.
- Don’t rely on Instagram. “Word of mouth is powerful. IG isn’t everything.”
- Work hard, but know when to say no. Balance is key.
- Keep learning. Pilatesology and Pi Pilates offer great continuing education.
Why Core Strength is Key
In Pilates, the “powerhouse” refers to the core muscles—abdominals, lower back, and glutes.
“Stability and control are the foundation of movement,” she explains.
“Without core strength, posture, walking, and even daily tasks become compromised. Pilates teaches you to move with awareness.”
How Often Should You Practise?
Joseph Pilates’ famous 10-20-30 rule still holds true:
“In 10 sessions, you'll feel the difference. In 20, you'll see the difference. In 30, you'll have a whole new body.”
For best results?
“Aim for at least two sessions a week with an instructor you connect with.”
The Philosophy Behind SR Pilates
Sophie-Rose’s approach is simple:
“I want clients to leave feeling different than when they walked in—whether stretched, stronger, or just more present.”
Her studio is designed to be a sanctuary.
“It’s a space for people to grow in their Pilates practice. I stay true to the Classical method, but I also want the environment to feel like home.”
With countless studios in London, what makes SR Pilates unique?
“I think it’s the personal connection. My clients have been with me from the start, and I’m invested in their journey. It’s not just a workout—it’s a relationship.”

Navigating the Wellness Industry
With so much information out there, wellness can feel overwhelming. Her advice? Start small.
- Find one practice that makes you feel good.
- Ignore trends. Not everything works for everyone.
- Trust yourself. “Just because a brand says you need something doesn’t mean you do.”
Wellness Non-Negotiables
For Sophie-Rose, daily habits keep her grounded:
- No phones after 9 p.m.
- Reading before bed (currently loving Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow).
- Coffee only with food.
- Movement daily.
- Less doom-scrolling, more podcasts (Miss Me is a favourite).
- Make the bed every morning.
- Infrared light therapy.
- Skincare essentials: Reome & Nue Co.
- No phones at dinner.
Finding Balance
Being one of London’s most in-demand Pilates practitioners comes with its challenges, but Sophie-Rose has found ways to protect her energy.
“I say yes only when it’s good for me, too. I’m strict about my weekends—my partner, our cats, and I stay in for 24 hours to reset.”
At the end of the day?
“I try to leave stress at the door, turn my phone off by 9 p.m., and make time for family and friends. That keeps me sane.”
